This workshop will provide an overview of QUWA (Arabic for power), a community violence prevention program, which combines self-defense training and trauma healing for Syrian women refugees; the session will include background on the types of violence QUWA addresses, the process, the self-care and self-defense manual we use, the idea behind it, and firsthand experiences in Turkey, including photos and testimonials. Interactive activities from the QUWA manual will be used, with a particular focus on personal boundaries as a tool to prevent violence. The session will also discuss the practical and effective strategies that this project used for building inner and outer peace in the hopes that participants will both utilize these tools for themselves, as well as think about addressing and preventing violence in a way that combines individual healing and wellness, physical and emotional boundary-building, and community support.
