This panel will address how various types of state-sanctioned violence undermine LGBTT and women of color’s human right to self-determination. We will address how the incarceration of mothers of color:
violates the human right to family integrity and undermines whole communities of color, intersects with the child welfare system and the impact it has on the children’s mental health, which leads to over-diagnosing and over-medicating of girls of color with psychotropic medications, and leads to forced sterilization of women of color in prison, violating women’s human right to self-determination. We will conclude with a discussion about some of the community-based tools we are using to empower women and LGBTT people of color to assert their right to self-determination - community/family yoga practice for self-actualization, legal trainings to fight child welfare, and homecoming socio-economic community survival trainings and anything the participants bring to the table.
